Deneb and his brother Rigel are named after stars. Deneb's middle name is a phonetic misspelling of the Locrian musical scale. Deneb's father is an amateur astronomer and his paternal grandfather worked as an aerospace engineer at Bell Aerospace, designing the fuel injector systems for the early Apollo missions and working on the design of an early jetpack. Rigel is a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve. Deneb's adopted sister Emily, via his mother, is more than 20 years his junior, so middle child syndrome set in late.
